As soon as you can say "sleep splendid sculpture", a name sculpture in the Vatican City. If your answer is Colonna Venus, then right you are! But did you know that this sculpture is a replica of Aphrodite in Turkey?
Yes you read right. Turkey is actually home to one of the most impressive ancient ruins in the world. Knidos or Cnidus is an ancient city on the peninsula Datca Turkey. It used to be the home of Aphrodite as a famous sculpture of Praxiteles. It is said that the sculptor created this masterpiece in the year 350 BC.
The Missing Goddess
Like the Colonna Venus in Vatican City, Aphrodite is depicted naked in ancient sculpture. In ancient times, the sculpture was placed in a small temple by the sea. Unfortunately, we lost and to this day archaeologists are still looking for it.
So what else can see if Aphrodite Cnidus is nowhere to be found? Well, any Datca holiday is incomplete without a stop at this ancient site. Imagine having a vision of the ancient world, while the sea and beautiful backdrop. That's a real treat for any historian, hiker or beige beach.
