For the first time to Europe?

My boyfriend and I are "planning a trip to Dublin and London, possibly sometime in late September for two weeks. We have never been abroad, so we do not know anything about European travel. I'm doing much research, but I am struck by how expensive airfare and hotels are located in these places. Does anyone have tips or suggestions on where to stay in Dublin or London, which is budget-friendly, but it is still good (ie, at least one bathroom in the room)?
