U.S. Driving the Yucatan Peninsula?

What should I expect to find in Mexico, leading to the Yucatan in the U.S.? What are the best places to spend the night? Camping? Hotel? How much toll fees for a long journey?

Charley's response very large. There was a bad move between Tampico and Tuxpan with lots of road works and generally not good roads. (Although that was a few months ago so things may be better now.) I can confirm the roads are very good last Veracruz up to Cancun. (If you go that far.) I made the drive last August, crossed at Brownsville TX. Then, spend nights in Tampico, Veracruz, Ciudad del Carmen and Merida. (Campeche is nice too, you might want to spend time there.) It is not so wrong with an engine, we did in Toronto in seven days. Of course, if you have more time, then stretch out, enjoy the views. Try to drive in the light day throughout Mexico as the road sometimes has surprises, such as trucks without lights, the guys on the road on a bike, animals, potholes and so on. Hours of driving is much easier / better. Do not worry about the tolls, if you have an option to take a toll road VS. a open road – take the toll road. It will save time and money in the end. I imagine that probably paid about $ 25 in tolls to the extent of Merida. Speedway toll between Merida and Cancun is expensive, about $ 30 for that alone, but again, it's worth. The unit in the toll road which is about three hours to Cancun while the open road is at least twice as much time and wear on your car.
